IMDb Movie of the Day
Even amidst the furor and controversy, there was a note of excitement in Catholics' response to Kevin Smith's Dogma: someone still cares! Despite its gleeful irreverence, the movie contains more discussion of Catholic doctrine than any popular movie in the last decade. The plot hinges on God's infallibility: two wayward angels--Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck)--have been banished to... Wisconsin, but they have discovered a loophole back into heaven. If they make it, God (Alanis Morissette) has made a mistake, Her infallibility is disproven, and the universe ends in a flash. Add to that a distant relative of Jesus Christ who works at an abortion clinic, a black "13th Apostle" (excised from the Bible in an ancient act of racism), and an archangel named Metatron, and you get one heretical stew. Nonetheless, there is an underlying affection towards religion that tempers the sacrilege. In the end, the movie does not take itself seriously enough to be worthy of offense, which is a shame. Smith remains resolute in his dedication to minimalist, amateurish direction. Dogma is very, very funny, but frustratingly insubstantial.

You're the Tops
Have you visited our "Top Movies" section? It's the best place to find the top grossing films, top rentals, top searched and top rated films. There's also top films by genre, by year--it makes your head spin (top pun intended--sorry). On our "Most Wanted" search list last week was the sorely missed Jason Robards and Ray Walston and cinematic stalwart Tom Hanks. They're the tops.
